Where Are You Noticing Rodent Activity?
The first sign doesn't always reveal the full problem. The location and timing of what you notice can help narrow down where to inspect.
Droppings in the Basement or Laundry Area
Droppings near a water heater, washing machine, or utility line may mean mice are moving through a lower-level space. Check for fresh signs around pipes and stored boxes, not just the spot where you found them.
Noises Between Floors
Scratching above the basement or inside a shared wall can sound as though rodents are in several rooms. Mice may travel through hidden openings around plumbing and framing. The sound alone doesn't confirm the species.
Fresh Signs After Cleanup
If new droppings appear after you've cleaned safely, activity may still be ongoing. A few successful traps don't rule out additional mice or an exterior opening that allows more to enter.
Damage in the Garage or Storage Area
Chewed feed bags, gnaw marks, or larger droppings near a garage may point to rats or mice. Rat burrows are another clue to check outdoors, but a hole in the ground alone doesn't identify its cause.
An Unexplained Smell
Rodent urine, nesting waste, or a dead mouse in an inaccessible area may cause an odor. Avoid opening walls just to chase the smell; look for other evidence before deciding what needs attention.
